Chargedwithleadingdemonstrationsforthedemocratizationmovement,studentactivistKimGi-young(MoonSung-keun)isafugitivefromthelaw.Hesneaksintoaminingvillageonthevergeofbeingshutdown,withafakeIDinhand.Feelingfrustratedwiththecurrentstateofactivism,whichcentersaroundtheintelligentsia,hegetsajobasaman-of-all-workatacoalfactoryandmeetsthemotleyinhabitantsoftheminingvillage.Dae-sik(YangJin-yeong)workstosupporthisfamilyinplaceofhisfather,whoisinprisonforinstigatingastrike.DetectiveKang(LeeSu-chan)alwayskeepsasharpeyeoneverythingthatgoesoninthevillage.ThentherearestrikeorganizerCheonDo-seong(KangNeung-won),fellowworkerJeong(HwangHae),Taek’smother(KimKyung-ran),andSun’smother(JoJu-mi).Sung-cheol(ParkJoong-hoon),whosefatherisalocalbigshotandtheownerofthecoalfactory,lordsitovertheneighborhoodbarsandcafes.Angryathisfather(ParkKyu-chae)forleavinghismotherandmarryinganotherwoman,Sung-cheolventshisresentmentonthecafegirlsandfactoryworkers.Meanwhile,Young-sook(ShimHye-jin),whoworksasaprostituteatthelocalcafe,isbecomingfedupwithSung-cheol’sviolentanddemeaningtreatmentofher.WhenshemeetsGi-young,whoisreservedbutwarm,shebeginstohavefeelingsforhimandstopssellingsexualfavors.Astheimpendingminers’strikedarkensthehorizon,Gi-youngandYoung-sookfallinloveandenjoyeachother’scompany.Thenoneday,Sung-cheolreceivesnewsofhismother’sdeathandwreakshavocatthecafe.WhenYoung-sookrefusestosatisfyhisdemands,hestartstobeatherup.Gi-youngtriestostophim,buthisinterventionbringshimtotheattentionofDetectiveKangandheishauledofftothepolicestation.Gi-youngundergoestortureatthehandsofthepolice,butheiseventuallyclearedofallchargesandreleased.WhenhefinallycomestothroughYoung-sook’sdevotedcare,hetellsherthatheisawantedfugitive.Hisidentityissoonexposedandheisforcedtorunoncemore.Young-sookdecidestoleavethevillagewithhim,andheadstothecafeforherthings.Whilemakingherlastcoffeedelivery,Young-sookrunsintoSung-cheol,whotriestostopherfromleaving.Sheendsupkillinghim,andisdraggedoffbythepoliceasGi-youngwaitsforheratthetrainstation.
